Our mission is to provide temporary overnight shelter to anyone in need.
The shelter begins by meeting the client's most important needs first: clean and warm bed, food, bathing and laundry facilities. Next, the shelter provides the clients with resources to meet their future needs: referrals for permanent housing, addiction services, job placement services, clothing vouchers, and much more.
We are a non-profit organization, operating with a volunteer Board of Directors as well as two night managers who are paid a small salary. These night managers are Derek Wyatt and Bobby Huffman.
The shelter is located at 3200 Statesville Road, North Wilkesboro, NC 28659 in the upstairs of Crossfire United Methodist Church.
History
The shelter began offering its services in 1987 after a local task force determined there was a high need for assistance to the homeless in our community. The shelter was named to honor the memory of Catherine Harris Barber, who was a native and lifetime humanitarian of Wilkes County.
Ms. Barber was well-known for helping others, particularly through her helping to raise several foster children throughout the years. Initial funding for the shelter came from a fund in memory of Mrs. Barber, Blue Ridge Opportunity Commission, Inc. and Wilkes Community Action Committee, Inc.
With the help of numerous community leaders and interested persons, the shelter opened its doors at the Northside Chapel in November 1987.
